Mission Statement

Since 1984

At our kennel we focus on things a little differently than the “average” AKC Hunting Beagle Breeder. Bellow is the general order we strive for. Some things aren’t mentioned, but it doesn’t mean we overlook it; it means it’s not as high in our priorities.

1) Good Hunt with Brains

2) Good Kennel Manors

3) Conformation (No Deformities)

4) We like a big nosed beagle, but frown highly on extra mouth on track

5) We breed away from dogs that run trash (dogs that run deer, fox or anything other than rabbits or hare)

6) We raise beagles that run a good line, but can really “drive game”

7) We “definitely” consider ACCOMPLISHMENT to be much more important than STYLE in our beagles

Now for the squirrel dogs, we are very green Laughing  We trained coon dog from 1984 through 1998, we trained retrieves from 1988 though 2004, we trained birddogs from 1989 through 2005, and we started training squirrel dogs in 1994, but quit in 1997 since all 12 of the Kemmer Mountain Cur’s we trained didn’t suit us. We put gundog titles on several retrievers and one birddog. We didn’t compete with the other breeds.

Now in 2008 we started back into squirrel dogs. We decided to get one of the best bitches we could find as a “foundation stock”. On December 12, 2009 we purchased GR SQ CH, CH Oak Tree FLY off Randy Church. “Fly” is ¾ Mountain Cur & ¼ Treeing Feist. “Fly” also paced 7th overall in the 2005 NKC World Hunt.

December 31, 2008 New Years Even we breed “Fly” to Gr Sq Ch, J’s Joe Black. Joe Black was the 2006 WTDA Winter Classic Squirrel Hunt Champion. Were keeping and training two females out of this litter, Heasley’s Keystone Fly Trapper & Heasley’s Keystone Super Fly. Hopefully after this winter we will see what kind of cross this was.

1) Any good squirrel dog has good hunt. So hunt is a “give me”.

2) Good Kennel Manors-My squirrel dogs have a hard time with kennel manors, since squirrels are constantly traveling/timbering over top of them in trees & electrical lines. I occasionally put bark collars on them.

3) Confirmation-they all are good or we would keep them.

4) We like a big nosed beagle, but frown highly on extra mouth on track-as far as big nose in a good squirrel dog that’s important, but they use it different that a beagle.

5) We breed away from dogs that run trash (dogs that run deer, fox or anything other than rabbits or hare)-same with squirrel dogs.

6) Beagles that run a good line, but can really “drive game”-style in squirrel dogs isn’t something that’s considered import. I think its way to big of an issue in beagles also. A good squirrel dog should get treed quick and stay treed till you get there. That can be hard to find.

7) We “definitely” consider ACCOMPLISHMENT to be much more important than STYLE in our beagles-A good squirrel dog should use their eyes, ears & nose almost equally. Its personal preference if a squirrel dog trees with their feet up on a tree or off. It doesn’t matter a whole lot to me, but I do like for a squirrel dog to “see & follow” a squirrel if they timber out/move to other trees. I think they can see this better when they're back off a tree.

In the near future we should have squirrel dogs active under the main menu.

On November 7, 2009 come support this great event! Cool

The Salamonie Youth Rabbit & Squirrel Hunts: The Indiana Beaglers Alliance will be hosting its 7th Annual Youth Rabbit Hunt at Salamonie Reservoir. This year we will also be having a Youth Squirrel Hunt following our rabbit hunt. These events are “Co-Sponsored Events” with Salamonie Reservoir (IDNR), the National Cur & Feist Breeders Association, and the National Kennel Club.

At this time we are at full capacity for youth, but we have started an alternates list. We need all the help we can get. We could use some more guides and a few dog handlers with good beagles & squirrel dogs. This year is going to be a little different. In the morning will be our traditional RABBIT HUNT and in the afternoon following lunch will be our SQUIRREL HUNT. Youth can register for both hunts or one or the other; just let us know when registering.

Parents of the youth that are registered, we could use some snakes, deserts, ????? If there are any wives or men that aren't helping in the field with the kids, it would be nice if they could assist in helping in the lunch area. Debbie Cooper & Melanie Stafford are heading up the kitchen duties & decorating the dining area. No one helping in this capacity would have to be there all morning. If they choose so they could watch the kids hunt most of the morning, leave the field a little before the rabbit hunts over and head to the lunch area. We also could use more snakes and deserts.

We're going to be "updating our home page" October through December of 2009. It will continue to be in service, but will be under construction during these months. Let us know what you'd like to see different on our site, and if there's enough feedback on the topic we'll try to make those changes.
